My Open Source Initiative
Around a couple months ago, I made a commitment to learn webpack… And about a month ago I actually started to learn about webpack. It’s part of my new initiative to try and explore big open source projects on camera to try and get better at jumping into big code bases and understanding different programming paradigms. The initial plan was to learn on video, but after spending a couple hours looking through the code and still not understanding the flow of control of the program, I decided to hold off on that.
I previously thought that fumbling around for hours trying to learn a code base would be something I’d want to see as a viewer, but quickly learned how boring it would be after seeing how little progress I made after each look-through. I’m still not where I’d like to be but I think I’ve gotten a good enough feel for the webpack codebase to start making videos about it.
Although my plan is to do this for multiple popular open source projects, I’ll probably spend about 3 months on each one to try and get past superficial observations regarding the codebase. I’ll probably write some blog posts about these topics (so that I can milk the most out of my newfound knowledge), so stay tuned for that as well!
